Judy Deutsch- Sudbury's Unsung Heroine

Congratulations to Judy Deutsch who has been chosen to be Sudbury's Unsung Heroine of 2007. Judy was nominated by the League of Women Voters of Sudbury; and we are very proud of her. The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women will honor Judy and all of the towns' nominations across Massachusetts at a special ceremony at the State House on May 16, 2007.

As many of you already know, Judy has been very active in the local and state League in the area of health care. She has led the health care action committee in our local League for many years, bringing in speakers of national renown, such as Marcia Angell, MD and John Abramson, MD. She has written about universal health care/single payer for the Town Crier and has put on several cable TV programs.

Judy is our state League's health care specialist. She follows health care legislation closely and prepares briefs for the League's Program and Action Committee. She lobbies our state legislators on behalf of the League and gives an overview at our annual Day on the Hill meeting.

For many years, Judy has been involved with MassCare. She is now a member of the Advisory Board and is Chair of the Legislative Committee that has rewritten the single payer Health Care Trust Bill. She has been a major force on the Legislative Committee, contacting and educating legislators about universal health care/single payer.

Judy has served on the Sudbury Council on Aging from 2000-2006. She was an active member of the accreditation team and has worked on numerous fundraisers. She also drives for FISH and serves in many ways as a strong advocate for seniors.

Judy is a 25-year member of the Sudbury Democratic Town Committee and campaigned for the office of State Representative several years ago.

For many years, Judy has worked for affordable housing in Sudbury and is an associate member of the Sudbury Housing Authority. Under the aegis of First Parish Sudbury's Faith in Action Committee, she helps mentor a "lifer" at MCI Concord, has helped immigrants to apply for citizenship, and has worked to assist the homeless. Judy is a former minister of a Unitarian Parish, leads religious education programs for children and teens, and facilitates adult programs, such as leading the First Parish in a national initiative to create a Statement of Conscience on Peacemaking.

Congratulations, Judy. May you bask in the glory of your title

of Unsung Heroine!

About Sudbury

Sudbury is a charming community located approximately 20 miles west of Boston, along the major highways of route 20 in the south and route 117 in the north, and bisected by route 27. Rooted deeply in history, Sudbury is known for Longfellow?s Inn, including the Redstone Schoolhouse where Mary brought her little lamb, the grist mill and the Martha Mary Chapel. The town is also noted for its excellent school and well managed government. Sudbury is one of the older towns in the New England area, being incorporated in 1639, and it has one of the oldest and longest running open meeting forms in the government.
