About The League


Purpose
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, multi-issue, grassroots organization that encourages informed, active participation of citizens in local, county, and national governments.

History
Since its founding in 1920, the LWV has influenced the passage of the following legislation:

1930's Enactment of Social Security and Food and Drugs Act

1940's Helped lead effort to establish the United Nations

1950's Conservation of all natural resources

1960's Civil Rights Act/equal opportunity in education employment and housing

1970's Clean Air and Water Acts

1980's Voting Right Amendments, tax reform

1990's National Voter Registration Act

Goals:
Educate citizens about issues, legislation, and candidates

Encourages individual participation in the political process

Informs through in-depth, objective analyses

Monitors government activities from local to national

Registers millions to vote

Sponsors candidate debates and public issues forums

Takes Action/ Lobbies/Testifies

Teaches citizens and non-citizens about their rights and responsibilities
